Bounded by the Warrego River and the Landsborough Highway, Augathella is a service town for surrounding grazing properties and visitors alike. Whilst traditionally, Augathella was the centre of a wool growing area with much of the local employment related to wool growing and processing, in recent times, sheep grazing has largely been replaced by cattle grazing. Today the majority of employment in and around Augathella is derived from service industries such as tradespeople, shopkeepers, and hospitality and transport businesses in addition to beef production, macropod (Kangaroo) harvesting and saw milling. Augathella has a thriving cypress pine timber industry with exports to Japan and the United States. Today, Augathella has a population of approximately 500 and is part of the Murweh Shire which has a population of about 5000. Murweh Shire encompasses Morven, Cooladdi, Augathella and its administration centre, Charleville. |
